Claressa Shields Breaks Silence on Relationship With Papoose
Claressa Shields is clearing the air around her romance with Papoose.
During a recent interview on “The Breakfast Club,” the undefeated boxing champion addressed her relationship with the Brooklyn rapper and his very public split from his wife and fellow emcee, Remy Ma. When co-host Charlamagne tha God referenced her comment that there are “some things Pap needs to handle,” Shields didn’t shy away.
“It’s the elephant in the room, I don’t have to say it … in his personal life,” she said. “But that takes time and like I said, that’s not my place to speak on. It’ll get handled.”
Despite the messy circumstances, Shields made it clear she’s emotionally invested. “No, because we are together all the time,” she replied when asked if she’s holding back until the divorce is finalized. “We talk about so many different things… kids and family and stuff like that, but that still has to get taken care of.”
The pair’s bond is strong, Shields said, describing a daily routine of phone calls and FaceTimes. “We love each other,” she emphasized. “When somebody is just truthful with you from the beginning, there is no secrets. It’s just, hey, ‘this is what it is, and do you accept or do you not accept?’”
Their connection, she added, predates the public fallout with Remy Ma. Shields recalled, “We fell asleep on the phone for three, four months of us first getting together… we talked from sun up to sundown.”
That dynamic was thrust into the spotlight last December when Remy took to Instagram to expose private messages between Shields and Papoose. In the screenshots, Shields expressed frustration with Pap for not letting her know he’d made it home safely.
At the time, Remy wrote, “Papoose dumb a— fell asleep on the phone with @claressashields... Now I’m telling everything! Oh, and babygirl, you’re not the only one.”
Still, Shields kept it graceful. “I don’t have any ill will toward any women and I don’t have any ill will toward her,” she said. “She made her post and whatever and that was about it.”
As of now, the current status of Papoose and Remy Ma’s marriage remains unclear.
