Drake Gets Personal About His Dad’s Cancer Diagnosis on 'Iceman'

The rapper’s new album turns deeply intimate as he shares a painful family health update and fans flood Dennis Graham’s Instagram with prayers.

Drake is letting fans into one of the most personal chapters of his life on his new album “Iceman.” He dropped two other surprise albums as well, “Habibti” and “Maid of Honour.”

On the opening track of “Iceman,” (“Make Them Cry”), the rapper reveals that his father, Dennis Graham, has cancer, delivering the news in lyrics that are both raw and direct. “My dad got cancer right now, we battlin’ stages,” Drake raps, adding that there are “plenty things” he would rather be facing.

According to a street interview with TMZ, Graham has since received some good health news. Following the “Iceman” drop, he shared that he's currently in remission from lung cancer.

"That was a while back. I'm okay now. I'm wonderful," he said. "My phone's been blowing up all night. Thank you guys for the concern — I love you all, and from the bottom of my heart I appreciate you."

Dennis added, "It was lung cancer at first but fortunately I got a message that it disappeared. And here I am."

In the same “Make Them Cry” track, Drake reflected on aging, criticism, and the pressure that comes with being in the public eye, even as he looks inward at his role as a son and father. People reported that he also raps about “father[ing] my mother” and seeing his parents as “an older couple.” This project seems to be rooted in family and time passing.

The reveal landed with even more force because Drake’s dad himself appeared to respond with love. Graham posted an Instagram photo of the two of them together and captioned it, “The Ice Man and The Nice Man just doing what we do, don’t get it twisted,” prompting fans to fill the comments with prayers and well-wishes.
