White Mississippi Campground Manager Who Pulled Gun On Black Couple Gets Zero Jail Time
Ruby Nell Howell, the 70-year-old white Mississippi woman videotaped waving a handgun at an African-American couple having a picnic during Memorial Day weekend, has been convicted of a misdemeanor charge.
According to the Clarion Leger, local news outlets are reporting the former Kampgrounds of America worker was found guilty by the Oktibbeha County Justice Court of threatening exhibition of a weapon on Tuesday (Aug. 27).
Howell was ordered to pay a $250 fine, along with $182.50 in court fees. However, she will not spend a day in jail.
Back in May, the video went viral showing the campground manager pulling a gun on a Black couple trying to have a picnic by a lake.
“RACISM IS ALIVE AND WELL,” Jessica Richardson on the video’s caption.
The couple, Jessica and Franklin Richardson, said they had no idea they needed a reservation.
“It’s kind of crazy,” Franklin Richardson, a Army National Guard Sergeant who had recently returned from a nine-month deployment overseas, said with WCBI. “You go over there and don’t have a gun pointed at you, and you come back home and the first thing that happens is you have a gun pointed at you.”
Kampgrounds of America spokesman Mike Gast released a statement saying the company "does not condone the use of a firearm in any manner" on its properties or franchises.
