Ryan Coogler Reveals He’s Working On An ‘X-Files’ Reboot For His Mom
Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” was recently shown at Los Angeles’ Cinespia at The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and during the event, Coogler sat down with Variety and shared limited details on his “The X-Files” reboot and mused over Oscars buzz for Michael B. Jordan.
Coogler isn’t done making history with “Sinners.” It’s the first film to show at Cinespia during the same year it was released. “I’m so excited,” Coogler said. “This is a dream come true. This is my favorite event in Los Angeles. I’m from the Bay Area, and L.A. is like our first cousin. There’s a lot of differences between Southern California and Northern California, but we have a lot more in common than we do different. But Cinespia is such an L.A.-specific event and so unique. It was always a dream of mine to make a movie that could play here.”
“Sinners” has become a cultural phenomenon, also in the same year it was released, much like Coogler’s “Black Panther.” He and Michael B. Jordan’s working relationship has a tendency to generate Oscar buzz. The two are electric together. “Sinners” is no different and Coogler believes that Jordan took his skills to another level in the director’s ambitious period vampire epic. Critics and Coogler alike have praised Jordan’s dual performance of dynamic twin brother characters, Smoke and Stack.
Coogler said, “We asked him to do this difficult thing technically, playing two different characters, but it also was a performance that we needed to have the backstory that we had before to pull this off. To see him recognized by his peers and other folks in the industry, I know that would mean a lot [to] him.”
Coogler also shared what he's working on and it’s all thanks to his mother Joselyn. Apparently, the world has Coogler’s father Ira to thank for “Creed.” Coogler said he made the film because of his father’s love of the “Rocky” franchise. And now, because of her love of “The X-Files,” Coogler said yes to directing and rebooting the sci-fi series.
“My mom means the world to me — she’s actually here tonight — so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up,” Coogler said at Cinespia.
Apparently, rumors are swirling with who is potentially going to be cast in the series, and names like Danielle Deadwyler, Gillian Anderson, and David Duchovny were thrown around for obvious reasons. Can’t wait to see what this genius does with the classic.
