Letitia Wright’s New Film ‘The Silent Twins’ Will Have Your Eyes Glued To The Screen

The Focus Features film is based on the true story of sisters June and Jennifer Gibbons from Wales and is in theaters now!

Letitia Wright stars in her latest Focus Features film The Silent Twins and plays June Gibbons alongside Tamara Lawrance who plays Jennifer Gibbons and is sharing what was the most challenging about the role.

Based on a true story, the twins are the only Black family in a town in Wales during the 1970s and 80s, often feeling isolated from their community the pair turns inward and decides to reject communicating with anyone aside from each other. After going on a vandalism spree, the girls are sentenced to Broadmoor, a psychiatric hospital, where they are faced with separating and surviving or dying together.

“The most challenging thing that I faced was definitely just walking through those scenes that was so parallel to Jean and Jennifer's experiences as you will discover when you watch the film, there were moments that we that we had to like, just like keep each other uplifted because we were so shocked that they had lived this experience,” Wright says in a conversation with BET.com.

Adding, “They went through this and even though we went through it for four months of filming, they had to endure that for 11 years. And we definitely felt the strain of that responsibility, but also, what kept us going was the importance of being a vessel for their story, being a vessel for what they went through so that we can educate our audiences on the experience.”

For Lawrance, working alongside Wright was interesting and challenging at times.

“I think obviously playing twins you have to be you have to have a synergy that is not usually required of you when you just have like an ordinary co star. Normally if you're co leading there is a separation as two different characters. There's different processes but we had to be able to leave space to how the other works and to find a way to work together in order for the peace to work,” she shares.

Later continuing, “We both cared so much about the story and it's very easy to fall into a natural rhythm.”

And when it came to one unique thing that pair did to prepare as twins, Lawrance says that the unique speech and language the Gibbons twins created was an interesting feat within itself.

“A really cool thing that we were able to do is work with a dialect coach who very meticulously broke down the documentary to create an accent profile for the twins that we were able to study and create a kind of a shared vocal score,” she explains. “Like the range in which the twin spoke and the speed and the rhythm. Normally for another job, you might have to just learn an accent or something but this was very specific.”
