BET Awards 2026: Doechii's Multi-Category Nomination Year Proves She’s Here to Stay

From a 2019 bedroom recording to a Grammy win, the Tampa rapper's rise is one of the most wild and wonderful stories in music.

Let's set the scene: a 21-year-old girl in Tampa records a song called "Anxiety" in her bedroom, layers it over a Gotye sample, posts it to a mixtape, and moves on. Fast forward five years, a viral TikTok resurrection, a Grammy, and a re-recorded official release later, and that same song is now nominated for Video of the Year at the 2026 BET Awards.

That's the quick version of the Doechii origin story, chaotic, aligned, and completely inevitable in hindsight. Born Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon and raised in Tampa, where she attended Blake High School's arts conservatory program, Doechii spent years building the Swamp (her fiercely devoted fanbase) through sheer creative force.

Her debut mixtape, “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” earned her a Grammy for Best Rap Album, making her only the third woman in history to win in that category. Then "Anxiety" exploded onto streaming platforms in March 2025, debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100, and peaked at No. 9, making it her first top-10 hit. The music video, a geometric, paint-drenched homage to Gotye's original clip, brought her two VMAs, including Best Choreography. Awards are obviously Doechii’s birthright.

She closed 2025 the same way she opened it, with a statement. "girl, get up." featuring SZA, a surprise-released collab dropped on December 29, is now up for BET Her, reminding everyone that when Doechii links with another talented queen, something shifts in the air. Four nominations at this year's BET Awards: Best Female Hip Hop Artist, Video of the Year, BET Her, and the newly introduced Fashion Vanguard Award all represent the full scope of who Doechii is as an entertainer. She’s not just a rapper or an aesthetic. Doechii is a force with range that cuts across music, style, and culture boldly.

She already won Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the 2025 BET Awards, where she used the stage to speak directly about immigration and oppressed communities. Don't expect her to be quiet this time either. One thing is for certain: between four nominations, Doechii is definitely going to hit that stage and make another groundbreaking speech.

The BET Awards 2026, hosted by Druski, airs live Sunday, June 28, at 8 PM ET/PT on BET.
