2022 Soul Train Awards: 3 Times Artists Represented Neo-Soul On ‘Soul Train’

Artists like Maxwell and Erykah Badu ushered in a new sound that is still loved.

R&B and soul acts were always to be expected on Soul Train but when artists like Maxwell, Erykah Badu, and others began appearing with a new form of soul, nicknamed a revival movement by some, fans were introduced to sound quite like no other.

The genre gave music lovers classic albums such as Urban Hang Suite by the 2021 Soul Train Awards “Legend” honoree Maxwell, and Who Is Jill Scott: Words and Sounds, Vol.  1 by 3-time Grammy award winner, singer, and songwriter Jill Scott. So, in honor of the genre and the 51st anniversary of Soul Train join us as we take a look at three times a neo-soul performer blessed the iconic stage.

  • Maxwell 'Sumthin' Sumthin'

    Grammy-award-winning singer and songwriter Maxwell released this track in 1996 off his debut album Urban Hang Suite. He performed the successful single on Soul Train a year later when actor Dorian Wilson guest hosted two episodes.

  • Angie Stone “No More Rain”

    Angie Stone gave a breath-taking performance of her 1999 off her debut studio album Black Diamond. The record also samples  "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" by Gladys Knight & the Pips.

  • Bilal “Soul Sister”

    Bilal’s stage presence was unmatched in this memorable performance of one of his most notable songs to date, “Soul Sister.” The neo-soul classic was reimagined and featured on the soundtrack for the  2019 hit film  Queen & Slim.
