HBCU Men’s Basketball Programs Secure Three NCAA Tournament Bids For First Time In Decades
The 2026 NCAA Tournament field is officially set, and for the first time in decades, three HBCU men’s basketball programs are heading to the Big Dance at the same time. Tennessee State University, Howard University, and Prairie View A&M University each punched their tickets over the weekend, creating a massive spotlight for HBCU athletics as March Madness begins.
Leading the group is Tennessee State University, which earned a No. 15 seed after a dominant run through the Ohio Valley Conference. Under first-year head coach Nolan Smith, the Tigers are ending a 32-year hiatus, marking the program's first trip to the tournament since 1994. The team finished the year 23-9, led by OVC Player of the Year Aaron Nkrumah. Their reward is a first-round matchup against No. 2 Iowa State in St. Louis, a major milestone for a program that hasn't seen the tournament stage since the mid-90s.
Howard University is back in the mix as a No. 16 seed after sweeping the MEAC regular season and tournament titles. This marks the third time in four years that head coach Kenny Blakeney has led the Bison to the postseason. They are scheduled for a First Four battle against UMBC on Wednesday night. If the Bison can secure a win in Dayton, they’ll head to Buffalo for a high-stakes meeting with Michigan.
Rounding out the field is Prairie View A&M University, which pulled off an improbable run as the No. 8 seed to win the SWAC Tournament. Led by head coach Byron Smith, the Panthers are headed to the First Four to face Patriot League champion Lehigh on Tuesday. The winner of that contest moves on to face the defending national champion, Florida.
With Tennessee State ending a three-decade wait and both Howard and Prairie View A&M looking to fight their way out of the First Four, HBCU basketball has its strongest representation in years.
