Rapper Qualeisha 'Siddity' Barnes Killed in Atlanta While 14 Weeks Pregnant
Qualeisha Barnes, the Detroit-bred rapper known professionally as Siditty, was shot and killed in Atlanta in the early morning hours of April 8. She was 36 years old and 14 weeks pregnant.
According to CBS News Atlanta, Atlanta Police Department officers responded to a call around 1:23 a.m. and found Barnes unresponsive inside her white Range Rover Sport, which had come to rest in the middle of a street in the Springside Place SE area of the city. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family told reporters she was shot four times in the face.
"Upon arrival, they located an adult female deceased inside the vehicle from apparent gunshot wounds," Atlanta Police Lt. Christopher Butler said. Investigators believe shots were fired into the vehicle from outside. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and tracking Barnes' movements in the hours before the attack.
Barnes grew up in southwest Detroit and had lived in Atlanta for nearly a decade, building both a music career and a life she was clearly in the middle of expanding. In the Detroit hip hop community, she was known for tracks with artists including Icewear Vezzo, Babyface Ray, and Peezy. She also ran an online retail brand, So Siditty Boutique, under the same name as her music career.
Beyond music, Barnes was pursuing a nursing degree and had made the dean's list. She was two semesters away from finishing, according to her mother, Francine Lopez-Stewart. "She was proud of her academic progress and excited about her future," Lopez-Stewart told reporters, per Unheard Voices Magazine.
Her sister Shatara Davis addressed the loss in direct terms. "I know her as Qualeisha. I know her as LeLe. I know her as we, in the same house, in the same bed. That's what I know her as. That was my sister. That was my baby."
The family believes Barnes was targeted, though Atlanta police have not confirmed a motive or identified any suspects. Lopez-Stewart has publicly stated she believes more than one person was involved in her daughter's death. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS.
