Ohio Rapper Educates People On The Importance Of Voting In Powerful Visual

“Every time you stay home, someone is making a decision about you.”

Ahead of the 2020 presidential election face-off, Dayton, Ohio rapper YelloPain is going viral after he recently released a new single, “My Vote Don’t Count.”

  • For the innovative rap single, he breaks down why it’s important to vote during every election and not just the national race. He released the song along with a music video last month, but it’s gotten a second wind from the Democratic primary race.

The video opens with the rising rapper reminiscing over how he voted for former president Barack Obama in 2012, hopeful his presidency would lead to change in America. When change didn’t happen, YelloPain became disenfranchised with politics until he later reframed his mindset. The visual then cuts to the rapper inside of a classroom explaining how laws are made in America and how local politics affect our daily lives, referencing Travyon Martin and Meek Mill’s widely-known cases.

  • His message is further driven home with a powerful address from Desiree Tims, who is currently running for Congress for Ohio’s 10th District, according to Forbes. The publication also noted that she is YelloPain’s cousin.

“Every time you stay home, someone is making a decision about you. Making decisions about the air you breathe, the water you drink, the food your kids eat and how much money you bring home every two weeks,” Tims informs the classroom. “So everytime you sit out of an election, everytime you don’t show up because you didn’t think it doesn’t matter, someone else is happy to make that decision for you. Vote.”

  • The music video has continued to make its rounds on social media as the presidential race gains steam. Speaking to Forbes, YelloPain shared that he was inspired to make the song after a pivotal conversation with Tims changed his perspective on the importance of voting.

“One day, sitting in the dining room of my house, it just all made sense,” he recalled. “When it made sense, it clicked so hard. When that realization hit me, it became something I had to do.”

Ultimately, he hopes “My Vote Don’t Count” will help more people realize that their voice deserves to be heard no matter how small it may be.

“To me, this is the most important song I ever made,” he said. “I aspire for this song to reach all of the people who feel like they don’t know why things are not working out for us as a whole.”
