Another day, another challenge to hit the social circuit. This time it’s the #DontJudgeChallenge, where teens post clips of them looking ‘fake’ unattractive and then revealing their true beautiful selves. Oh, and there’s really good background music thanks to the app Musical.ly, where it seems the challenge originated from (check it out for yourself in the clips below).

Why you ask? Because their supposed to be preaching some type of “don’t judge a book by its cover” type of lesson. But in all honesty, that message is lost in their execution. I’m not the only one to think so either. For as much as the challenge has gone viral, there has been an equal amount of backlash. Some are furious that the teens participating in the challenge are covering their faces in unibrows, acne, glasses and more before unveiling their gorgeous looks, therefore labeling these things as ugly. And did I mention that they’re all REALLY gorgeous.

Others, including myself, are saying that they're just further molding society’s standards of beauty and making others who don’t live up to them feel less than. It’s silly to think this is what’s going to open people’s eyes to idea that beauty isn't superficial. In fact, it's actually supporting the opposite and just making the unibrow-baring, acne prone, glasses-wearing population feel like s**t.

At the same time, though, I take this challenge for what it is — a social media trend. It’s not that serious. It too shall pass when the next pointless craze comes along. And before I get attacked, I just want it to be noted I’m a glasses wearing, once-had-a-unibrow and still-suffering-from-occasional-breakouts young lady who happens to think she’s still gorgeous regardless. Beauty is relative, but confidence is always well received. I’m secure enough with myself to just not pay any mind to this challenge. It’s not worth it. You’re just giving it more attention than it deserves, thereby contributing to its relevancy.

With that being said, I’m done talking about it, too. And to those participating, if that’s what floats your boat, go ahead, but please do not think for a second you’re changing the world. Keep calm and carry on.
