Alicia Keys Visits the Philippines

Singer performs for typhoon survivors.

As the Philippines continues to move forward from Typhoon Haiyan, which ravaged provinces and claimed more than 5,000 lives, Alicia Keys is using music to help heal survivors, the Associated Press reports.

On Monday (Nov. 25), Keys performed at the Villlamore Air Base located in Pasay, just south of Manila, the country's capital city. She also handed out crayons and coloring books to children, and stayed for roughly 30 minutes to speak with evacuees, who were flown in from eastern provinces Leyte and Samar via C-130 planes, Social Welfare Department officer Jane Abello said.

The native New Yorker, who visited the country once before, arrived in the Philippines Sunday (Nov. 24) for her "Set the World on Fire" show in Manila a day later, and said, "Music has a way of lifting your spirit and that's what I hope to do for the Filipino people."

As a spokesperson of Keep a Child Alive, a non-profit organization that raises money for children and families affected by AIDS in Africa, the Grammy-winner is no stranger to charity work, and tweeted her gratitude to the Philippines. "I'm so grateful I was able to come to the Philippines and spend some time with some of the most resilient, beautiful spirits I've ever met," she wrote Monday. "Today was next level. Thank you for your inspiration!"

Although aid has come in from the around the world, the Southeast Asian country is still very much in the recovery stage. As of Friday (Nov. 22) the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council placed the death toll at 5,235, with 23,501 injured and 1,613 missing.
