South Carolina Wants to Honor Barack Obama With His Own Highway
The South Carolina Senate made history this week, voting unanimously to honor the legacy of the nation's 44th president.
The South Carolina Senate on Wednesday unanimously approved a proposal to name a portion of Interstate 77 in Richland County after former President Barack Obama, advancing a measure that now heads to the state House for consideration, according to WPDE.
The resolution, introduced by Sens. Darrell Jackson and Tameika Issac Devine, would request the Department of Transportation to name the stretch of I-77 from U.S. 1 to Interstate 20 in Richland County "President Barack H. Obama Highway." If approved, the SCDOT would install markers along the designated section of the highway.
Sen. Jackson, who has been a driving force behind the effort, said the move was personal. "I realized there was nothing in South Carolina that honored him," Jackson said. "His legacy [is] such an important figure. As you know, South Carolina was very important in his run for president."
Jackson added that the designation would serve as a meaningful tribute, noting that "President Obama's leadership inspired a generation and broke barriers that once seemed impossible."
The measure comes weeks after a separate House proposal to name the future Interstate 73 after former President Donald Trump, though Jackson said his bill is not a response to that effort.
The resolution still needs approval from the state House before it can move forward.
