Regina King Finds New Ways to Keep Son Ian Alexander Jr.’s Legacy Alive

Three years after his passing, the Oscar winner says she thinks of Ian “24/7” and carries him with her always.

Regina King is finding new ways to honor her late son, Ian Alexander Jr., three years after his passing. The Academy Award-winning actress is channeling her love and grief into MianU, a wine brand inspired by Ian’s life and spirit.

In the August issue of Haute Living, King reflected on the memories she holds closest with her son, including time spent together in New Mexico during a break after filming “The Harder They Fall” in 2021. She described those weeks as a rare period of stillness, where she and Ian cooked together, shared space, and slowed down. “We would cook together, he would write music, and time slowed down a bit,” King recalled. “It was nice not to always have a meeting or a call; the stillness wasn’t a bad thing.”

She admitted that if she could revisit any moment, those days in New Mexico would be at the top of her list. Ian was focused on music while King was editing her film One Night in Miami. That combination of creativity and closeness is one of the memories she continues to cherish.

MianU serves as another way to keep Ian present. The brand’s name and logo include Ian’s handwriting, making him part of the project in a tangible way. King said the idea came after he first introduced her to orange wine. For her, the brand is more than just a new business venture — it’s a living tribute to her loving son. “Maybe they’ll ask,” King said of the name on the bottle. “His name is right there, in the middle of it all. He’ll never be forgotten. If you see me, you see Ian.”

Earlier this month, King also shared with Parade that she combs through Ian’s journal entries, and one of his handwritten initials became part of MianU’s logo. “It is something that I know he’d brag about,” she said.

With MianU, King is keeping her son’s memory alive in a way that continues to create connection, for herself, for those who knew him, and for those who never got the chance.
