Are You Here for This? A Remake of a Classic African-American Movie Is in the Works

DeVon Franklin and Common will produce.

Another classic Black film will get new life at the box office.
According to Deadline, super producer DeVon Franklin and Oscar winner Common are teaming up for a remake of the 1975 coming-of-age film Cooley High. The original film is set in 1964 Chicago and chronicles the lives of two high school best buddies — Preach (Glynn Turman), an aspiring writer, and his best friend Cochise (Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs), the school basketball hero who’s headed for college and potentially the NBA — as they make their way through their final year of high school.

The project is "in the works" at MGM with Seth Rosenfeld (The Get Down, How to Make It In America) currently writing the script, so it's not clear when the film will actually go into production, but considering what's happening in the country and the timeliness of the film's themes, hopefully it'll be sooner than later. However, this film is a classic and might be a challenge to bring to the big screen. Would you want to see a remake of this iconic film?
Watch Common, a Chicago native, talk about how his hometown is represented in the media in our exclusive interview above.
