Trump Jokes He Will Not Be Leaving Office for '8 or 9' More Years

This isn’t the first time Trump has made comments about pushing term limit boundaries.

On Monday, President Donald Trump made an off-the-cuff joke that many are side-eyeing.

During a small business summit at the White House, Trump remarked that he would leave office in “eight or nine years.”  The comment, delivered in a light tone, landed while he spoke about a package of business-friendly tax provisions and broader economic plans, according to Reuters.

The remark drew attention because it echoed Trump’s track record of blending humor, provocation, and intention in one seemingly casual remark.

The joke also arrives against a backdrop of renewed debate over Trump’s governing style and political future, with his administration pressing ahead on a wide range of priorities while opponents argue his comments often blur the line between banter and intent.

This isn’t the first time Trump has made comments about pushing term limit boundaries. Back in 2018, he asked, also during a tax event, whether the U.S. should "go back to 16 years" like Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 2019, he kept the bit alive at rallies and interviews, before he walked it back with a wink, telling crowds, "we're probably entitled to another four," always insisting it was humor even as critics saw a pattern of testing boundaries.

The remarks also stir talk of presidential term limits, which were enshrined in the 22nd Amendment in 1951, which caps leaders at two elected terms to prevent an overreach of power. That rule stemmed from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms, breaking a two-term tradition set by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson; no one has tested three terms since.

In a 2025 interview with NBC, Trump said, "I'm not joking" about serving a third term. He also mentioned, for the first time, that there is a method for doing so.

"There are methods which you could do it," he said, adding that "it is far too early to think about it."
