Anchor in Hot Water for Using 'Jigaboo' Slur, Apologizes

Cleveland news anchor Kristi Capel apologized for using the racial slur "jigaboo" to describe singer Lady Gaga's performance at the Oscars.

Morning news anchor Kristi Capel learned the hard way that jigaboo is not an appropriate word to use while commenting on a performance or in any other situation.

"I deeply regret my insensitive comment. I didn't know the meaning and would never intentionally use hurtful language. I sincerely apologize," she wrote Monday.

The Cleveland broadcaster apologized to her viewers on Twitter Monday for using the racial slur, often used as an offensive term to refer to Black people, to describe Lady Gaga's colorful and dramatic performance style that she toned down for her Oscars performance Sunday night.

"It's hard to really hear her voice with all the jigaboo music that she whatever you want to call it jigaboo," said Capel on Monday. "She has a gorgeous voice. I never knew." The clip was shared on several social media sites such as Twitter, Vine and Facebook causing a firestorm which landed the anchor in hot water.

One Twitter user, @crtx216, wasn't buying the fact Capel did not know the meaning of the word. ""@Kristi_Capel @AngryandBlack no. You know the historical context of that word. I know you do cause you used it in reference to a performer," he wrote Monday.
