Reverend Henry Biggs (Courtney B. Vance) is a preacher in an underprivileged community with marriage problems. His wife, Julia (Whitney Houston), rarely gets the attention she needs, and adding to his stress is his battle with a real estate developer looking to take over the church property.

Feeling lost and confused, Biggs prays for guidance and is bestowed with heavenly help in the form of Dudley (Denzel Washington), an angel. As Dudley begins to make his presence known, he only adds to the complications in Biggs' life.
