Eight Black girls, who said racial bias played a role in their rejection as cheerleaders at Florida’s Park Vista High School in Palm Beach County are getting another chance to join the team this August.

They, along with 16 other girls of unidentified racial and ethnic background, had not made the squad.

In mid-June, the African-American young women alleged that their rejection was a case of racial discrimination. After a recent loud and sometimes heated four-hour meeting with parents, the students and school administrators, it was decided that all 24 rejected girls should get another chance to cheer.

School principal of Park Vista Reggie Myers, who is African-American, told a local news station “that let’s go ahead and give all of the other girls that were below that bar an opportunity to compete for four spots and we will find a way to make that happen. And also get rid of this sense of perceived unfairness.”

At the time of the incident, the Black girls said that their charge of discrimination was based upon unequal treatment at the hands of the team judges. The girls say that they completed their routine and that “non-minority students didn't and still made the team.”

Sixty girls tried out for the team, and 36 were chosen. The Black girls who tried out didn’t make it.
