Louisiana Supreme Court To Hear Arguments Over Killing Of Former NFL Player Joe McKnight

The former New York Jets running back was killed during a road rage incident.

The Louisiana Supreme Court has reportedly agreed to hear arguments over whether the man who killed former NFL player Joe McKnight during a road rage incident in 2016 can be tried again for murder after the overturning of his conviction on a lesser charge.

According to ESPN, authorities in the New Orleans suburb of Jefferson Parish originally charged suspect Ronald Gasser with second-degree murder in the shooting of McKnight.

McKnight was a highly sought after high school football star, who later played his college career at USC before being drafted by the New York Jets.

Instead of murder, Gasser was convicted of manslaughter, however that verdict was later overturned because it came from a nonunanimous jury.

Gasser admitted to police he was the gunman who killed McKnight. A witness, who did not give her name, claims Gasser and McKnight were arguing, however McKnight was attempting to apologize. That’s when Gasser pulled a gun on McKnight and shot him more than once. His defense team has claimed self defense.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office said the nonunanimous decision for manslaughter should not be treated as an acquittal on the murder charge and that prosecutors want another chance to try Gasser for murder, ESPN reports.

A state district judge ruled, with a state appellate panel agreeing in a 2-1 ruling, that trying Gasser again on the murder charge would violate his constitutional protection against double jeopardy. The Louisiana Supreme Court did not set a date for arguments on the issue.
