Trump Orders DHS to Finally Pay TSA Workers Stuck in Limbo
After weeks of chaos and missed checks, President Donald Trump says he’ll order the Department of Homeland Security to “immediately” pay Transportation Security Administration officers.
Thursday evening, Trump said in a Truth Social post that he’ll direct newly sworn-in Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to swiftly get money to TSA staff “to tackle this urgent situation.”
Specifics remain shrouded: the White House has not yet explained how long the payments will last or exactly where the funding will come from, leaving big questions for workers who’ve already depleted their savings just to keep the lights on.
“Well, obviously it takes the immediate pressure off, but you know, it’s a short-term solution,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., to reporters on Capitol Hill after Trump’s announcement. “Give the president credit for responding to a crisis in a way that will make sure that after these guys drug this out for 41 days now, TSA agents are finally going to get paid.”
TSA officers missed their first full paycheck in mid-March, which prompted a spike in sick calls and the longest airport security wait times the agency has ever reported, as some officers chose between clocking in and taking on a side job to cover rent.
More than 400 TSA employees have quit since the shutdown began in February, and many of those who stayed say they’re falling behind on bills and facing threats like eviction and car repossession.
While TSA staff have been working without pay, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers have continued to receive checks thanks to the “Big Beautiful Bill” funding package Trump signed last year.
That climate has fueled anger among some airport workers. The White House has dubbed the funding standoff a “Democratic shutdown crisis,” while Democrats insist they won’t sign off on money for ICE without reforms to immigration enforcement.
For TSA officers, the politics are background noise; they just want to know when their next real paycheck will land.
