Back in May, Serena Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian attended Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding to Prince Harry. From outward appearances, it looked like the legendary tennis player was just one of Markle’s celebrity invites, but apparently, they’re much more than acquaintances.

We’re now learning, via an interview Williams did with Australian news program The Project just three days after her controversial U.S. Open loss from earlier this month, that her and Markle are quite good friends and share their thoughts with each other often.

“We have known each other for a long time, but we really are relying on each other a lot recently,” she continued. “We were actually just texting each other this morning.”

Williams also discussed the Royal Wedding. “I felt like we were literally watching history,” she said. “I feel like in a few years, when I look back at that moment, it’s just gonna be so historic. It’s gonna be something people never forget.”

“The whole service was really wonderful and most of all, I just wanted to see my friend be happy and I think that’s what happened,” Williams continued.

Also during the interview, Serena Williams discussed the U.S. Open outcome and reiterated how she believed she didn’t cheat of receive coaching during the final sets of the match. Furthermore, she relayed her frustration about the uneven treatment of men and women in athletics. Watch the full interview below.
