Hip Hop Awards 2022: Tyler, the Creator’s Artistic Visions Bloom in These 3 Blazing Visuals
Tyler, the Creator, amassed a total of three wins during the 2021 Hip Hop Awards ceremony—hosted by the 85 South—including “Hip Hop Album of Year,” ”Rock the Bells Cultural Influence Award,” and “Best Live Performer.” Ahead of this year’s show, we’re looking back at some of Tyler’s most eye-catching videos stretching across his musical career. Check them out below.
“EARFQUAKE”
“EARFQUAKE” is the second single from the rapper’s fifth studio album Igor, released in 2019. The music for the uptempo track features a cameo from award-winning actress Tracee Ellis Ross as the comedic talk show host has invited Tyler on as a performer.
The Grammy Award-winner soon takes the stage, wearing a blue suit and his signature Warholian wig, dancing, singing, and playing the piano until his cigarette sets everything ablaze. The rapper suffers various burns and then passes out only to return as a firefighter to put out the fire.
“SEE YOU AGAIN”
Tyler’s “SEE YOU AGAIN” was released under the rapper’s highly underrated fourth studio album Flower Boy and featured vocals from songstress and frequent collaborator Kali Uchis. The music video was directed by Tyler, the Creator, under the alias of Wolf Haley and uploaded on YouTube on August 8, 2018. Tyler portrays a sailor away from his lover, yearning to return to her. It also features a guest cameo from his best friend and rapper A$AP Rocky.
“Yonkers”
Tyler showed his talents behind the camera early in his career with the release of the horror-hop “Yonkers,” the second single from his debut studio album Goblin that propelled him centerstage on the rap scene. This song’s visual—self-directed by Tyler— is as dark as its subject matter. Though many may find it a tough watch, as Tyler performs the track while handling a roach, it went viral, earning him several accolades, including a “Video of the Year” nomination at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.
