No More ICE Roadblocks? Rep. LaMonica McIver Makes Bold Oversight Push
It's been exactly a year since Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) clashed with ICE agents at a New Jersey detention center, and now she's pushing in a big way. McIver just introduced a bill to ensure Congress can oversee Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) without the drama.
McIver, along with Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez introduced the “No Delay for Immigration Oversight Act” on May 12, according to The Hill. McIver says it's about speaking up for detainees facing "cruel treatment" amid a record number of deaths.
“This has been ICE’s deadliest year in 30 years and the nation is calling for action,” McIver said in a statement. “That’s why I’m introducing this bill to reaffirm the people’s right to have someone speak up for the voiceless, go where others are not allowed, uncover the abuses that we know take place in the dark, and stop the brutality against our immigrant neighbors.”
The announcement came on the anniversary of a chaotic May 2025 visit to Delaney Hall in Newark, where ICE agents were trying to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. After McIver stepped in during the scuffle, she was charged for allegedly impeding federal officers—charges she calls a bogus retaliation against her for doing her job.
That incident sparked indictments, a GOP push to censure her, and even calls to oust her from the Homeland Security Committee. McIver pleaded not guilty, arguing legislative immunity and selective prosecution by Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney Alina Habba. Her trial's set for later this year.
The bill is straightforward: It demands immediate access for lawmakers to ICE facilities, without delays or excuses. Private contractors running these spots would face real penalties for blocking oversight.
"This Administration has repeatedly and illegally blocked Members of Congress from visiting detention centers," Rep. Menendez said in a statement. Watson Coleman added that ICE must answer to the public, especially as mass deportations ramp up under President Trump.
Oversight means transparency, and McIver is making sure no one's above it. The bill is a direct shot at DHS roadblocks, tying into broader clashes over Trump's deportation push.
The remaining question: Will it pass in a divided House?
