11 Celebrity Couples That We All Thought Were Staged for Publicity

Drake and J.Lo, Nick Cannon and Chilli and more.

It seems as some celebrities would go to any lengths to get the public talking — even if it means compromising their romantic integrity. Proving this are some of our favorite famous faces who linked up for reasons no one really knew, prompting many to believe it was all just a sham for headlines. From Drake and J.Lo to Rob Kardashian and Rita Ora, here are some of our faves.

  • Drake and Jennifer Lopez

Ever since AubRih ended, many have sat around waiting to see what famous A-lister Drizzy was going to be linked to next. When it was revealed that she was none other than Jennifer Lopez, many were impressed while others were giving their new situation the side-eye. Specifically after the two started flaunting their admiration for one another all over social media days before 2016 New Years Eve, the believablility of their relationship seemed a bit hard to swallow. It's rumored that they're putting the PDA on 10 for a new project they have in the works. Only time will tell.

  • Blac Chyna and Rob Kardashian

One day they are together, they next day they are not. Even though they have a child, you can't help but wonder if this relationship is all about exposure for reality television. Kris Jenner clearly has her eye on them. As of now, they are allegedly seperated but the photo above tells a different story.

Prior to marrying Kanye West, Kim Kardashian was in her fair share of high profile relationships, with one of them making its way to the altar. The relationship in question is her 2011 union with athlete Kris Humphries that notoriously lasted 72 days. What further led many to believe that their relationship was possibly staged is that all of their problems and relationship struggles were portrayed on their reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

Dancing With the Stars pro-turned-judge Julianne Hough became a hot topic in 2010 when she began dating media mogul Ryan Seacrest. The couple flaunted their love for the cameras often, but many didn't buy into it as the dancer had just broken up with country singer Chuck Wicks a few months prior to making it official with Seacrest. Their realtionship lasted for three years.

The narrative of an actress dating her movie love interest in real life seems so cliché, but that is exactly what Twilight star Kristen Stewart did in 2008. She and her co-star Robert Pattinson had a low-profile romance that year. The actress notoriously reacted coyly whenever she was asked about him. Many thought this was a strategic pairing drummed up for publicity for the movie, which ended up being one of the most successful movie franchises ever.

It's sometimes hard for fans to believe that a celebrity relationship is valid when it orginated on a reality show. This was the case in 2004 when Flavor Flav began dating his Surreal Life co-star Brigitte Nielsen. What really made fans give them the side eye was their spin-off show chronicling their "love," which came soon after, titled Strange Love. Making this seem even more of a sham, after they ended production of the show, Brigitte ditched Flav and returned to her fiancée, Mattia Dessi.

Before the weight gain, the newborn and Blac Chyna, Rob Kardashian was once making headlines for his relationship with then up-and-coming singer Rita Ora. In October 2012, the reality star confirmed that they were dating, but just two months later, news broke that their relationship had already ended. In the months following, he called out the singer for her alleged "promiscuity" but fans began scratching their heads as she never really acknowledged their relationship and the course of events just seemed sketchy.

Following his divorce from Mariah Carey in April 2016, Nick Cannon was linked to a few women, but it was his rumored relationship with singer Chilli that caught everyone's attention, even if they weren't really buying it. She played his love interest in the music video for his single "If I Was Your Man" in November 2016, and since then, they were rumored to be getting cozy behind the scenes. Neither of them denied the rumors, but they eventually dissolved.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes began dating back in April 2005, and while initially, many believed they were the "it" couple of the moment, that began to waver following the actor's iconic appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show a month later. During the interview, when speaking of his love for his then girlfriend, Holmes, he jumped on the couch and began yelling to the rooftops — literally — about his infatuation with his lady. From that moment, many thought their relationship was all for show. They eventually got married, however and had a child together, but eventually divorced in 2012.

  • Moniece Slaughter and Digg the Kicks

Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood star Moniece Slaughter first got slammed for fooling fans of the show into thinking she was dating her bisexual co-star Miles Brock and it seems as she has another relationship up her sleeve as she's currently dating female sneaker seller Digg the Kicks. Some say this is another ploy for a story line. Bring on the next season of LHHH.

Brandy began dating the producer of her Full Moon album, Robert "Big Bert" Anthony, in the summer of 2001. After initially keeping their relationship quiet, Brandy spoke out about them being together, revealing that they were actually married after she began showing from expecting her first child. The drama began, however, after the birth of her daughter, when they announced their separation. In 2004, however, Big Bert dropped the bomb that they were never actually legally married and that their fake union was all a sham to preserve the singer's good girl image. From then on, Brandy hasn't had the best of the luck in the love department.

Kenya Moore began dating personal trainer Matt Jordan — who is 16 years her junior — at the end of 2015, but seeing the sketchy situation that was her previous Real Housewives of Atlanta relationship, many took this one with a grain of salt. Matt and Kenya have been off and on since announcing they were a couple, but every problem they had seemed to play out on RHOA, prompting many to believe it was all for show. Even Matt revealed in December 2016 that she was only dating him for a story line on the show. Needless to say, they are no longer together.
To reminisce on when Drake and J. Lo were allegedly dating, check out the BET Breaks video, above.
