Beyoncé, The Exonerated 5 And ‘Pose’ Dominate The 2019 Emmy Awards Nominations

#BlackExcellence all around.

Nominations for the 71st annual Emmy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning, and Black, female and LGBTQ+ talents were all recognized for their efforts. In particular, Beyoncé's widely praised Netflix special, Homecoming; the chilling story of the Exonerated Five, When They See Us; and one of the most eye-opening and brilliant prime-time series in recent memory, Pose, were all highlighted.

    Queen Bey was recognized for her work on her earth-shattering Netflix documentary/Coachella performance special, Homecoming, in various categories. Her writing and directing work were highlighted by the Television Academy as well as her crew's work in costuming and music direction. Homecoming's nominations are as follows:


    • Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special

    • Outstanding Costumes for Variety Nonfiction or Reality Programming

    • Outstanding Direction for a Variety Special

    • Outstanding Music Direction

    • Outstanding Variety Special (pre-recorded)

    • Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special


  • These aren't the superstar's first Emmy nominations of her career. She already has four noms under her belt from her work on the 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show, 2015's On the Run Tour with her husband, Jay-Z and her iconic 2016 release, Lemonade.

    The Ava Duvernay-directed Netflix story of the Exonerated Five (formerly referred to as the Central Park Five), When They See Us, stands as one of the top dominating shows in this year's telecast, earning a whopping 16 nominations.

    The likes of Jharrel Jerome, Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis were nominated in major categories. The series was also nominated in one of the most coveted categories of the event: Outstanding Limited Series. The When They See Us list of nominations in major categories is as follows:


    • Outstanding Limited Series

    • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie (Jerome)

    • Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie (Ellis, Nash)

    • Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie (Marsha Stephanie Blake, Vera Farmiga)

    • Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie (Asante Blackk, John Leguizamo, Michael K. Williams)

    The Ryan Murphy-created series Pose, which explores the birth of the ball culture in New York City, among several other topics, was deservingly recognized for its brilliance. The show's lead actor, Billy Porter, earned his first Primetime Emmy award nomination, while the show was also recognized as a unit.

    Pose's major nominations are as follows:


    • Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Porter)

    • Outstanding Drama Series.
