Dave Chappelle Explains Why He Endorsed Andrew Yang For President
Dave Chappelle knows which box he’s checking In the coveted Ohio primary. The comedian made a splash earlier this month when he endorsed tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang’s bid for president.
According to the actor and comedian, he announced he was “Yang Gang,” and more recently, told the Des Moines Register that Yang has “great ideas.”
"If people listen to me, so be it, if they don't, so be it, but I know I'm doing my civic duty by just saying the thing I believe in," he said. "This is without irony or a punchline, I'm just telling you – this guy's got some great ideas, you should check it out."
Aside from Chappelle, other celebrities have announced their endorsements for who they’d like to sit in the Oval Office. See some of the others below.
John Legend and Chrissy Teigan
In a November cover story for Vanity Fair, Teigen and Legend make the big reveal.
“My favorite — I’m going to say it, we’ll break news today — is Elizabeth Warren,” Legend told the magazine for its upcoming December issue, according to Page Six.
“She’s the best candidate running today, and she comes at it with joy and with sincerity and with a wealth of knowledge and experience,” he said.
Teigen, added, “I love Elizabeth Warren,” she said. “I also love Kamala Harris.”
Vivica A. Fox
Earlier this month the 55-year-old actress told PEOPLE she’s endorsing Joe Biden, and according to her, it’s about experience and respect. “He’s got ‘that thing,’” she said. “He has that history, and he’s been there.”
Willow Smith
During a massive rally last December, Smith, as well as Anderson .Paak, and others showed up in support of Bernie Sanders. Thousands reportedly attended the event.
T.I.
T.I. publicly endorsed Bernie Sanders in 2016 and appeared on The View in October to reiterate that support, saying Sanders is the best candidate to defeat Trump. "For me, it's anybody but Trump 2020," T.I. said initially. But, when pressed further about who he believes can beat 45, the rapper added, "Right now, the only person I see who has a base strong enough to oppose him is Bernie [Sanders]."
Donald Glover
In December, Donald Glover and Andrew Yang held a pop-up campaign event, which also became the actor and musician’s initiation into the Yang Gang as he’s officially been tapped by the campaign as a creative consultant.
Cardi B
The Bronx rapper has famously been enthusiastic about Bernie Sanders and has even held interviews with the Vermont senator. Sanders has also said they’ve spoken by phone on numerous occasions about policy ideas and more.
Roxane Gay
The writer threw her support behind Elizabeth Warren during a November rally at Clark Atlanta University. The event highlighted Warren’s African-American agenda, including her takes on HBCU funding, reparations, and more. Massachusetts rep. Ayanna Pressley was the opening speaker for the event.
Lil Yachty
In a video tweet from February 2019, Bernie Sanders announced his presidency. Lil Yachty later retweeted the tweet and captioned it, “Let’s gooooooo.”
Noname
Noname also threw her support behind Bernie Sanders via Twitter. In an October 2019 tweet, she wrote, “Bernie Sanders” followed by a check mark emoji.
Hannibal Buress
Dave Chappelle isn’t the only comedian to endorse Andrew Yang. Buress retweeted a tweet from political commentator Howard Fineman who claimed the entrepreneur made a “clever point” during a debate with the caption “Yang Gang.”
Killer Mike
The Run The Jewels rapper’s support for Bernie Sanders has been no secret. He served as a national surrogate for Sanders since his 2016 campaign for president and hasn’t wavered his endorsement, even with the introduction of a new field of candidates for 2020.
Dream Hampton
The filmmaker, via Black Womxn For, joined a coalition of 100 black women and gender-nonconforming activists supporting Elizabeth Warren. “We endorse Senator Warren with the full weight of accountability,” the organization announced in November. “Our endorsement is not a blanket approval of all of her acts, both past, present, and future but rather a firm and calculated understanding that should she fall short of her commitments to us and our communities, she will be held to account.”
Dominique Wilkins
During a December interview with Fox News, the NBA legend threw his support behind Andrew Yang, labeling him a “slam dunk decision for president in 2020.”
Vic Mensa
In July 2019, the Chicago rapper headlined a grass-roots fundraiser for Bernie Sanders in Hollywood and, according to him, Bernie’s history of fighting for civil rights is primarily why he gave him his support.
