Twitter Slams ‘In The Heights’ Musical For Little Afro Latinx Representation

Comments online led to a discussion about race in the film.

The In the Heights musical hit theaters and HBO Max this weekend. Immediately, the film was slammed for its lack of representation of Black Latinx in the lead roles.

The film follows a Dominicnan community in Washington Heights, New York City. Based on the 2008  Broadway musical  with lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, the flick has been called out for casting lighter skinned actors in the leading roles.

One person tweeted, “So I watched #InTheHeights. Listen, I’ve lived in the heights for nearly 10 years on and off - there are NOT that many light skinned folk up here. The movie just wasn’t black enough for me. I’m glad it got made - but Dark skinned Latinos exist y’all. I’m tired.”

The eagerly anticipated film underperformed at the box office, according to CNN, only bringing in an estimated $11.4 million when the film was projected to rake in around $15 to $20 million.
