As in the words of “Chun-Li” femcee Nicki Minaj, Murder Inc.’s first lady and R&B songstress Ashanti been on, as she reminded everyone on the red carpet at the 2018 MTV VMAs.
The Long Island-native didn’t take the stage at the awards ceremony, but she did take a moment to share some thoughts on the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient who Ashanti goes way, way back with: Latina entertainment triple-threat, Jennifer Lopez. For those who aren’t aware, Ashanti pushed her pen and her vocals as songwriter and lead vocalist on a few of Jenny from the block’s hip-hop crossover hits from the early 2000s, such as “Ain’t It Funny (Murder Remix)” and “I’m Real.” At one point, the “Rock Wit U” singer even expressed some discontent with the decision of her Murder Inc. rap collaborator Ja Rule to hand off the latter to J. Lo.
On the VMAs red carpet though, Ashanti expressed excitement for Jenny’s performance medley as the stage star of the night. As she should be, when taking into consideration the hits from her catalog that Ashanti penned for her. “I think it’s amazing that she’s getting honored tonight,” Ashanti said. “Hopefully, she’ll be performing one of the songs I wrote for her.”
The interviewers playfully cut her her red carpet interview short after suspecting a bit of shade. But the internet certainly caught the rest of it, and they’re seconding Ashanti’s sentiments.
