UPDATE (11/30/18, 1:00 p.m.): Alas, it turns out that fans' suspicions over Jay-Z's "What's Free" diss they believed was aimed at Kanye West and his MAGA hat checked out as false. In his first tweet since summer 2017, Hov hit the kill switch on the Twitterverse's uproar that shot his name to the top of the site's trending topics upon the release of the album and song.
"The line clearly meant don’t pit me against my brothers no matter what our differences are (red hat)," he tweeted in response to the controversy. "Now go pick up Meek album . Drake and Meek on there together."
The GOAT hath spoken.
Original story below:
Fresh off of his worldwide On The Run 2 tour beside his global megasongstress wifey, Beyoncé, Jay-Z climbed back atop his throne on Thursday night (November 29) to remind the rest of hip-hop’s corral of his GOAT status via Meek Mill’s new Championships album.
Hov joined the MMG force for the Biggie Smalls-esque track “What’s Free” with the Philly emcee and his MMG head honcho Rick Ross. The record borrows its instrumentals from Big’s OG “What’s Beef” record of 1997 while the three rap heavyweights dig bars into the soiled state of freedom in America. Meek keeps his verses centered on the prison reform and justice system cause he’s recently dedicated his platform to, while Ricky Rozay reminisces on his humble street beginnings and the recent incarceration of Brooklyn rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine. Hov spends his chock-full of lethal bars to further awaken the touchy political and personal matters in Black America, as well as one of their most controversial intersections connected to himself: Kanye West.
Hov name-drops ‘Ye and his MAGA-hat madness. For those still likening his legacy with the Watch the Throne collaborator and self-proclaimed brother-in-hip-hop to that of late greats Michael Jackson and Prince, Hov wants you to cut that out, too.
“No red hat, don’t Michael and Prince me and Ye,” he spits. “They separate you when you got Michael and Prince’s DNA.”
If these bars smoked up the room, the next few sent fans through the roof as they hollered suspicions of shots fired at Ye, his Trump bromance, and his Hollywood assets, which include his wife, Kim Kardashian.
“I ain’t one of these house n**gas you bought,” he raps. “My house like a resort, my house bigger than yours/ My spou—C’mon, man…”
Allow Genius to provide their interpretations below:
Any hip-hop head knows that there's just as good a chance that the bars could actually be aimed at the White House colonist himself.
But let fans tell it, and Hov not only ripped the red hat off ‘Ye, but also the wig off his wife and the toupee off his president:
