Cardi B Claps Back At Jermaine Dupri After He Trashed The New Generation Of Female Rappers
In a day age when a number of female rappers are tearing up the charts and breaking records as far as representation in the rap game goes, it seems like the male-dominated industry is heading in a new direction. But Jermaine Dupri voiced a much different take, and the recent comment from the record label executive has fans, and a few rap stars, heated.
The So So Def Recordings label head sat down with PEOPLE TV on Thursday (July 11) to talk about the music industry when the show hosts asked for his pulse on women in hip-hop. The media mogul came up short when they asked him if any of the new female rising rap stars had caught his attention lately. He admitted that he wasn’t that impressed by any current acts.
“I feel like they all rapping about the same thing,” the 46-year-old remarked. “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping. As far as rap goes, I’m not getting who’s the best rapper. I’m getting a story about you dancing in the club — who’s gonna be the rapper?”
His candid admission hit some nerves. Cardi B hopped on Instagram to weigh in on the matter, posting a video.
“First of all, I rap about my pussy because she my best friend. Second of all, it’s because it seems like that’s people want to hear," she began before going into the lack of support her music has gotten in the past when it isn’t sexual.
“When I did 'Be Careful,' people were talking mad s**t in the beginning, like ‘This isn’t what I expected. I expected this [and] I expected that.’ So it’s like if that’s what people ain’t trying to hear, then alright. I’mma start rapping about my pussy again,” she continued. “There’s a lot of female rappers that be rapping they a** off. Y'all don't be supporting them and they be mad dope.”
In a follow-up post, she shared a list of female rappers that she feels deserves more recognition, including XXL 2019 Freshman honoree Tierra Whack, Rapsody, Oranicuhh and Kamaiyah.
RCA signee Doja Cat clapped back at Jermaine in her Instagram Stories.
“There are women out there who talk about other things,” she ranted in the clip. She joined Cardi in showing her fellow femcees some love and support, dropping a short list of female artists carrying the banner and making a name for themselves in rap circles.
In the meantime, hip-hop fans are calling Jermaine out and bringing up the double standards that female rappers are held to in comparison to their male counterparts.
