Wale Says Record Deals Should Come With Mental Health Insurance

“You can spiral at anytime.”

Yesterday, Wale got candid about the importance of mental health in the music industry. On Thursday (August 8), the DC-bred emcee shared a clip from a recent interview he did with HipHop-N-More where he opened up about the mental hardships he has faced as a celebrity.

Over the years, Wale has spoken out numerous times about his internal struggle with depression that culminated into a drinking problem at one point.

  • This time the rapper opened up about the pressures of fame. Speaking with the online publication, Wale pointed out how negative comments online can be detrimental to one's psyche.

“[On] Monday, you [can be] going to bed looking at your comments and everybody telling you you’re the greatest and then by Friday everybody telling you that you fell off and you’re the worst. It’s difficult,” he admitted. “I think that a record deal should come with mental health insurance to be honest."

  • Wale is no stranger to dealing with intrusive, and sometimes derogatory, online comments. In November, the “Bad” rapper had to check a fan who criticized the rapper and said he had fallen off because his more vulnerable music about his struggles wasn’t resonating with fans.

The “Lotus Flower Bomb” hitmaker elaborated that when it comes to success “there’s no map” on how to deal with life in the limelight, which can cause artists to “spiral at any time.”

“It’s hard to keep yourself in check because there’s a lot of enablers,” he divulged. “The thing that’s even worse than enablers now is people that are so determined not to be an enabler that all they do is they think they giving you tough love but they kicking you when you're down.”
