Joe Budden’s ‘Pump It Up’ Was Actually About Masturbation, According To Just Blaze

Childhood ruined.

Rapper turned hip-hop commentator Joe Budden is infamously known for the shenanigans on his Spotify podcast series with co-hosts Rory and Mal. Some might be even more familiar with Joe because of his on-and-off relationship with Love & Hip-Hop: New York star Cyn Santana, the mother of his youngest son, Lexington.

  • However, before Joe fully immersed himself into his career as a hip-hop commentator, there was a point in time when he was at the forefront of rap as a part of Slaughterhouse. Here, he released his self-titled debut album that contained his most well-known hit to date, “Pump It Up.” The high-energy track was featured on soundtracks for 2 Fast 2 Furious, Step It Up, and the Madden NFL 2004 video game. Understandably, it’s an early 2000s hip-hop classic for many and still remains a year-round party favorite.

  • Super-producer Just Blaze, who’s behind the makings of the song, was recently on Sole Collector’s Full Size Run to chop it up with co-hosts Brendan Dunne, Matt Welty, and Trinidad James about his sneaker collection. During his appearance, he shared an interesting anecdote about “Pump It Up” that casted the song in an entirely new light. According to Just Blaze, the song had an entirely different meaning until Joe made a few lyrical changes.

“Did you know the original version of 'Pump It Up' was about masturbation?” Just Blaze dropped on the hosts at the 2:16 mark. “You know how in the second verse he's like, ‘My jump off doesn't care if I go out so much. My jump off…’ Originally it was, ‘My hand doesn't worry if I go out so much. My hand doesn't worry about... My hand…’ That's a fun fact.”

  • Yeah.
