Michael Jace has been formally charged with murder after police accused him of murdering his wife April Jace on Monday night, TMZ reports. The Shield star faces 50 years to life in state prison if convicted.

Jace, 48, called 911 after the shooting inside his Los Angeles home, admitting to police he was the one who pulled the trigger. Jace's wife was already dead by the time police arrived. The couple's two young sons were at home at the time of the alleged murder. According to police, the boys are now living with relatives.

Jace is currently being held on $2 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

The incident is the culmination of a history of domestic violence for the actor. According to his ex-wife Jennifer Bitterman, Jace routinely beat her and made their son Jordan fearful with his "intimidation style of discipline."
