Selma Nominated for Best Picture Oscar, Snubbed for Best Director

Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo ignored by Academy Awards.

Selma has been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Ava DuVernay's critically acclaimed civil rights drama will compete against films like Boyhood, The Imitation Game and others for Hollywood's top honor.

Though expected to make history as the first Black woman to be nominated for Best Director, DuVernay herself was shut out from the nominations, along with her leading man, David Oyelowo, who portrays Martin Luther King Jr. in the film. The acting categories — both Best Actor and Actress and Supporting Actor and Actress — failed to nominate a single person of color this year for any of the 20 nominations, opting instead to give yet another nod to Meryl Streep (Into the Woods) and favoring the likes of Ethan Hawke (Boyhood), Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) and others.

Selma was nominated, however, for Best Original Song for the track "Glory," by Common and John Legend. The song took home the award for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes last week. "Grateful," from Beyond the Lights, will also compete in the Best Original Song category.

The nominees in the technical categories were announced by directors Alfonso Cuaron and JJ Abrams, and the main categories by Chris Pine and Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
