Nelly Talks Real Husbands Collabos and More New Music

St. Louis rapper teases possible project with Pharrell, T.I.

Published December 24, 2013

As someone whose music has made clubs jump off for over a decade, rapper/actor Nelly knows a thing or two about taking a party to the next level. With the holiday season officially underway, the St. Louis-born MC helped turn up at Cabo Cantina on L.A.'s famous Sunset Strip where he teamed up with Tostitos to pregame for their Fiesta Bowl, set to air on ESPN on New Year's Day. caught up with him for a chat and he revealed he's still celebrating another successful season of Real Husbands of Hollywood, he's got some possible high profile collaborations, and, oh yeah, he has more choice words about NBA legend Kobe Bryant.

Your songs are known to take any get together to the next level. If you were throwing a party, what songs would you have to have on the playlist?
Might do a little "Hot in Herre!" [Laughs] I'm kidding. I think it's all about the group. The people that you're with, it also depends on your people and where you at at the time, cause I've watched the Super Bowl at the Super Bowl and I've watched the Super Bowl at home, and, the worst, I've watched the Super Bowl with a group of people who are going for the opposite team. When you goin' into something like this, you wanna be in a great environment so the music should be positive.

People are loving you on Real Husbands. Has being around so many talented comedians ever made you want to do comedy?
No, no, no! Being funny and being a comic are two different things. Like I can be funny now, but to be funny for ratings is something different. I just try to be me.

Can we expect to see any of the collaborations from the show (Eric Benét, Bobby Brown) happen in real life?
Actually, I produced a song for Bobby that he had a chance to perform on 106th & Park and I think they may shoot a video for the reunion show coming up, so we'll see what happens.

Speaking of collaborations, you and Eminem both came back this year repping hard for the Midwest. Any chance you two are ever gonna link up and do a track together?
I never say "no." You never know. Collaborations for me are just about whoever I spark interest with at the time. Actually, me, Pharrell and T.I. talked about doing something. You never know. I've got a busy year. I got some dates that I'm hitting top of the new year and some dates overseas and then I'm coming back here and then gonna be getting into a new project.

Speaking of getting busy in 2014, Angelenos got kinda mad at your Kobe comments from earlier this year. Do you think he's going to be able to bounce back from these injuries?
Let me first say, the league is much better when Kobe Bryant is in it and I think people are mistaken about my opinion about the team. That's all it is is just my opinion, you know, some people don't see it that way, but again, the league is much better when Kobe Bryant's in it. If anybody can come back from this injury, it will be Kobe. I don't know how effective he's gonna be, but we'll be able to see, and the guy's a warrior. It's not like I dislike him, but the truth of the matter is that I think sometimes people put Kobe ahead of the Lakers. That's the point that I was making. It should be about the team, it shouldn't just be about one guy and I just think sometimes the team gets overshadowed. is your #1 source for Black celebrity news, photos, exclusive videos and all the latest in the world of hip hop and R&B music.
