Serena Williams Says 'I Never Thought I Would Have Married A White Guy'

And some people are still big mad that she did.

Ahead of the premiere of her HBO documentary series, tennis star Serena Williams opened up in an interview with the New York Times, and one section about her interracial marriage stuck out to some people.

While speaking with the Times, Williams spoke about her relationship with Alexis Ohanian

“Oh, my God,” Williams told the New York Times. “Literally all I tell Alexis is, ‘well, you know, there’s such a difference between white people and black people.’ He always gets to hear about the injustices that happen; that wouldn’t happen if I were white. It’s interesting. I never thought I would have married a white guy, either, so it just goes to show you that love truly has no color, and it just really goes to show me the importance of what love is. And my dad absolutely loves Alexis.

“Ultimately I wanted to be with someone who treated me nice, someone who was able to laugh with me and someone who understood my life and someone that loved me," she added.

After the article was published, some fans applauded the superstar athlete for speaking positively about interracial relationships.

"LOVE IS LOVE AND THE HEART HAS NO COLORS," wrote one person on Instagram after the quote was posted by The Shade Room.

"All that matters is that she's happy, period," wrote another.

However, some people were clearly still in their feelings that she didn't marry someone Black.

"I'm sorry it's way too many Black men out here," commented one woman on The Shade Room. "I think she gave up to too quick on the Black man."

"I don't believe that will all the million of articulated, driven, educated, handsome, hardworking, and spiritual Black men that are out there that she couldn't find one to love her right," commented another Instagram user.

Despite the varying opinions of people on IG, one person had a simple response you can't help but laugh at.

"Be with someone that makes you happy. Just don't turn out like Kanye," wrote one man on Instagram.
