Why Emily B, Kelis and Patterns Of Domestic Abuse Are Not Meme Material

“We were all rooting for you” …and we still are.

Fabolous and Emily B made headlines earlier this month for the shocking domestic violence allegations that resulted in the rapper’s arrest (and almost immediate release), but this week they’re making headlines for something possibly more shocking than that—a Coachella appearance, together.

A video surfaced of the couple at weekend two of the star-filled music festival that a festival goer caught. While Fabis clearly shown in the short clip, the footage of his companion that appears to be Emily is not. Either way folks are up in arms over this occurrence of events since many felt for Emily.

The “we were all rooting for you” Tyra Banks’ memes quickly rolled in out of disappointment for allegedly going back to Fabolous. The internet attacked, but I’m confused. Aren’t they after the wrong person? Fab, allegedly, is this criminal here. Not Emily!

Calling her names for seemingly working on things with her man is NOT going to help. If anything, it’s will probably make matters worse. Haven’t you ever tried to talk your bestie out of going back to her man for the zillionth time and what did she do? Go back, right? Now, I get this is different since their specific scenario involves domestic violence which in no way should be taken lightly, but “attacking” is not the answer here either.

Instead, let’s let sis have a chance to address the situation. Let’s lift her up and not tear her down. No matter what went down, we as need create a space for women to be comfortable in telling their truth. We learned this with the #MeToo movement and we need to repeatedly learn this until women feel like they will be heard.
