Jay-Z Addresses NFL ‘Sell Out’ Claims In New ‘Flux Capacitor’ Song With Jay Electronica

The lyrics have arrived months after his controversial NFL deal criticism.

After nearly a decade of waiting from his fans, Jay Electonica’s debut album finally arrived.

  • Jay first alerted fans that the project was on its back in December of 2019. In February, he followed up with another announcement on Twitter that he would be releasing the album “in 40 days” and that Jay-Z would make an appearance on the record. Sure enough, his album, A Written Testimony, materialized amid concerns that the release would be delayed as a result of the coronavirus outbreak on Thursday night (Mar. 12).

  • The full-length project, which premiered exclusively on TIDAL, spans 10 tracks with feature contributions from the likes of Travis Scott, The-Dream, Hit-Boy, No I.D. and Swizz Beatz in addition to Hov, who had a message to deliver on his feature, “Flux Capacitor.” As many will recall, the Roc Nation honcho came under fire last year after he revealed that he’d partnered with the NFL to oversee the halftime performance and social justice initiatives. Those who were critical of Hov’s alignment with the NFL pointed out the hypocrisy of the deal in light of social activism leader and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s blackballing from the league.

  • Why would I sell out? /  I'm already rich, don't make no sense / Got more money than Goodell, a whole NFL bench,” Hov raps on “Flux Capacitor. “Did it one-handed like Odell, handcuffed to a jail / I would've stayed on the sideline if they could've tackled that s**t themselves.”

Hov’s response comes after he previously addressed the criticism in an interview with the New York Times ahead of the 2020 Super Bowl as well, stating “[Colin] was done wrong. I would understand if it was three months ago. But it was three years ago and someone needs to say, ‘What do we do now — because people are still dying?’”
