Inside Obama’s Big Chicago Opening
President Donald Trump will reportedly not be in the room for former President Barack Obama’s official opening of his presidential center in Chicago this June.
The dedication ceremony will be held on June 18, while the center officially opens to the public on June 19, with several days of celebrations to mark the historic occasion.
The ceremony will feature “legendary performances by global icons and powerful remarks from today’s most prominent voices,” according to a press release.
In an interview with MS Now’s "The Weekend" with Jonathan Capehart, Valerie Jarrett, the former Obama White House adviser, who now runs the Obama Foundation, has said the guest list is designed around everyday “changemakers” and leaders who worked closely with Obama during and after his time in office.
That circle includes former President George W. Bush, who is expected to be in attendance. Jarrett, who was a co-chair of Obama's transition team, also recalled to MS Now how supportive the Bush team was during the presidential transition and how willingly they helped during the Haitian earthquake in 2010.
She also stressed the importance of the center as a symbol for everyday people
“We have always believed in the power of ordinary people to come together to make extraordinary change,” said Jarrett in a statement. “The opening of the Obama Presidential Center will be a beacon of hope to the world and a place where we hope guests will be inspired to bring change home to their communities.”
Unlike a traditional presidential library, the campus is more like a community center as much as a monument to the 44th “forever” President of the United States. It will include a museum, a public library, and public spaces meant to attract young people, residents, and tourists alike.
“Here on the South Side of Chicago, hope is getting a permanent home,” Obama stated. “This is not a monument to the past; it is a living destination for people who refuse to accept the status quo. If you feel that way, this is your invitation to join us.”
Opening events are also expected to feature high‑profile speakers, reflecting the Obamas’ push to turn the site into an active gathering place.
