Soon to leave the Wade Family nest is Zaya Wade, who begins college this fall.

Wade’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union, who attended the 2025 Met Gala with husband Dwyane Wade on Monday, May 5, spoke to People on the carpet about preparing for Zaya’s high school graduation.

“Scared but excited for her,” the actress told People. “[She's] an astrobiology major. So we can't help with that. We haven't been able to help with homework since the fourth grade, but we're excited for next year.”

But the 17-year-old has been making the most of her time with younger sister, Kaavia Wade, 6, who attends the same school as Zaya. 

“It's funny because Zaya's a senior and [Kaavia's] in kindergarten at the same school,” Union continued. “And so during Kaav's lunch, Zaya comes and hangs out with Kaav. And this is really special that they're at the same school, at least for one year.”

Zaya is Wade’s second-youngest child with ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches, with whom the retired NBA player also shares his oldest son, Zaire Wade, 22. Wade is also a father to son Xavier, 11, with Aja Metoyer, along with being the legal guardian of nephew Dahveon Morris, 21.

Also on the carpet, Wade praised Zaya’s “confidence” as she navigates life as a transgender girl.
