Here’s How Culinary School Is Shaping Teyana Taylor
Teyana Taylor’s got a cute, new side quest that’s got the world screaming, yes chef!
In a recent playful sit-down with fellow actor Oscar Isaac, the multi-hyphenate bombshell revealed she’s enrolled in culinary school and is studying to become a chef.
She said the kitchen is a rare place where she can slow down and just be. “I’m also in culinary school to become a chef,” Taylor said and explained that cooking forces patience in an otherwise life that’s just go-go-go.
“I’m so excited. Like, literally as soon as we get off this interview, I’m going straight to class. I’m putting on my coat, my uniform, and I’m getting to it,” Taylor also divulged to Marie Claire this September. “It’s always been a passion of mine. I’ve always loved to cook. It’s been very therapeutic for me.”
“It’s actually the thing that gives me a few [moments] to just be quiet and cook,” she said, admitting that she’s even done coursework on her iPad between premieres. She joked about being surprised by her business classes and said, “When I signed up and realized I had business classes and all other types of s—, I was like, ‘Oh, s—, baby.’”
As Taylor’s career continues expanding, cooking is teaching her practical patience. Her recent album, “Escape Room,” offers a period of reinvention and resilience, and she’s letting it play out in her life as well through this new side quest.
Taylor said learning to respect slow-cook timing has helped her “map emotional beats” on set. She’s a standout in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, “One Battle After Another,” a role that critics have praised as a breakout for the star.
Taylor has all that magic going on for her onscreen, at the same time she’s maintaining an A-average in her online program. She said cooking is therapeutic, a way for her to tend to herself while parenting two daughters and balancing directing, choreography, and acting.
This is a woman who refuses to be one thing. She said, “Don’t lock me in a room. Don’t lock me in a box. I need keys to multiple doors. And I can pick and choose which one I want to unlock in my own divine time.”
