Azealia Banks Weighs In on the N Word Debate—And Flips It on Black Folks
Azealia Banks is known for her controversial takes, and her thoughts about Black people using the N word are no different. Over the weekend, Atlanta rapper Anycia sparked the conversation by tweeting, “if u not black. stop saying ni**a. period. idk why that’s so hard??? idc who u grew up with. if u NOT black expand ur vocabulary.”
It got interesting when Banks chimed in with her unpopular opinion on why Black people shouldn’t use the word either. She retweeted Anycia’s tweet saying, “No. Everyone in the world can say and do what they want and Black people really have no reason to be upset about it as offensive while we run around calling each other such an ugly word because we can’t expand our vocabulary,” she wrote on X. “If we want people to let it go, we have to do so first. African people do not use that word.”
Of course, Black Twitter had a lot to say about her take. One user replied, “This doesn’t surprise me that u said this.. didn’t u grow up in Spanish Harlem, where non Black ppl are calling u negro and morena for fun? It’s different in the South and other parts of America.. u should not be using the N word if ur not Black idgaf where ur from or who u are.”
We all know that, regardless of what commenters say, we can expect her to speak her mind at any time without second-guessing it. Whether folks agree with her or not, Azealia’s gonna Azealia—and she’s not new to ruffling feathers when it comes to race, culture, or identity. One thing’s for sure: the N word conversation isn’t going anywhere, and neither is her voice in it.
