BET Talks: Akon on Resilience, Positivity, and His Return to Music

The global hitmaker reflects on the journey that shaped his career, his collaboration with icons, and the uplifting message behind his upcoming album, 'Not Guilty.'

On a recent episode of BET Talks, hosted by Jessie Woo, Akon delved into his storied career, sharing candid insights about his beginnings, collaborations, and what keeps him inspired. The conversation covered his rise to fame, the lessons he’s learned, and his upcoming album, Not Guilty, set for release in February.

A Life-Changing Turning Point

Akon revealed how a pivotal time in jail transformed his life and set him on the path to music. “That was the turning point that made me really realize my purpose,” he said. While incarcerated, he began writing about his experiences, which led to his breakout hit, Locked Up. This moment gave him the clarity to focus on music as a means to change his trajectory.

Global and Generational Impact

Discussing the enduring appeal of his music, Akon highlighted how his songs resonate across generations. “The catalog kind of lasted so long, to the point where the fans kept me alive so well,” he shared. With hits that transcend boundaries, Akon’s global influence continues to prove the timelessness of good music.

Mentorship from Wyclef Jean

Akon credited Wyclef Jean as a major influence in his career. Joining the Refugee Camp under Jean’s mentorship helped Akon see music as a viable career. “Clef was like the big brother that always made me realize there’s something here that I can gravitate to,” he said. Jean’s guidance gave Akon the discipline and drive to channel his energy into his artistry.
