Inside Rihanna’s Parenting Philosophy Shaped by Her Late Father’s Life and Legacy

The singer shares why she refuses to raise 'tablet babies' and how reconciling with her father before his death influences how she parents her two sons.

Rihanna recently shared a parenting lesson inspired by her late father.

While walking the carpet at The Smurfs premiere, the soon-to-be mother of three spoke with Entertainment Tonight about one important parenting value he instilled in her.

She revealed that she doesn’t want her children to rely on tablets, a decision rooted in wisdom she received from her dad.

“No tablet babies,” she said.

“I’ve always dreamed of what type of grandfather he would be to them. He prepared me for having two boys, really. The adventurous side of me, the outside side of me, the daredevil. That’s how I want to raise them.”

The singer’s father passed away from pancreatic cancer and other health complications.

The actress attended his funeral in Barbados with her children, RZA and Riot, and her partner, A$AP Rocky. Her father’s fiancée, Rosemary, was also in attendance.

While they had a rocky relationship, she was able to make amends with her father ahead of his passing.

“You grow up with your father, you know him, you are a part of him, for goodness' sakes!" she shared with Billboard. "And then he does something so bizarre that I can’t begin to wrap my mind around it.”

She then shared during a television appearance featuring Oprah, that they were able to “close the gap.”

"He taught me everything, and as awful as he was to my mom, at times, it didn’t compare to how great he was as a father," she said during her appearance.

"And I had to come to terms with that, and I was able to close that gap with him.”
