Fans Shocked After Donald Glover Shares Stroke Diagnosis and Heart Complication
Donald Glover opened up about a recent medical scare that changed the course of his New World Tour.
On Saturday (Nov. 22), during his set at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw, the artist, performing as Childish Gambino, shared the moment things took a serious turn.
He explained that while on tour, he was hit with a sudden, intense pain in his head during a show in Louisiana.
His vision started blurring, but he still powered through the performance.
By the time the “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” actor reached Houston, he knew he needed help, and doctors told him he had suffered a stroke.
The “Redbone” artist joked that his first reaction was to compare himself to Jamie Foxx and his 2023 health crisis, but he admitted the real weight came from feeling like he was letting people down.
“That’s really like the second thing,” he said. “The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.’”
From there, things escalated. He revealed that doctors also discovered a hole in his heart, a complication that led to one surgery, and then another.
The recovery forced him to shut down the rest of the tour, including stops he still hasn’t been able to make up, like Ireland.
Onstage, he reflected on how the experience forced him to rethink everything.
“They found a hole in my heart … so I had this surgery, and then I had to have another surgery,” he told the crowd.
“They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one.”
He encouraged fans to live fully and intentionally, reminding them that nothing is promised.
“You should be living your life how you want,” he said.
“If we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
The “3005” rapper ended the moment by expressing gratitude for the journey he’s shared with his supporters. “The life I lived with you guys has been such a blessing,” he told them.
The “Me and Your Mama” rapper canceled tour dates in October 2024 after being hospitalized following his New Orleans show due to an ailment, according to a report by BET.com.
“After my show in New Orleans, I went to the hospital in Houston to make sure of an ailment that had become apparent,” he began.
“After being assessed, it became clear I would not perform that night, and after more tests, I could not perform the rest of the US tour in the time asked. As of now I have surgery scheduled and need time out to heal.”
