Tommy Davidson to Star in ‘Martin’ Spinoff Series ‘Varnell Hill’ Coming to BET+

The fan-favorite character is finally getting his time to shine in a new workplace.

Tommy Davidson’s fan-favorite character, Varnell Hill, is stepping into his own spotlight more than three decades after appearing on “Martin.”

BET+ has officially greenlit “Varnell Hill,” an eight-episode comedy series starring the legendary comedian reprising his role as the flashy talk show host.

The spinoff is being executive produced by “Martin” co-creator and star Martin Lawrence, longtime showrunner Bently Evans, and Jesse Collins. Evans penned the pilot and will also serve as showrunner and director.

According to Deadline, “Varnell Hill” picks up behind the scenes of the fictional late-night staple “The Varnell Hill Show,” where the star attempts to stay relevant in today’s media landscape. Set in a chaotic, high-pressure production world filled with satire, cutaways, and fourth-wall breaks, the workplace comedy will feature new faces, familiar nods, and celebrity cameos.

“Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to!” Davidson said in a statement. “I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence, over 30 years in the making. Fans have requested it, and now it’s coming to BET+.”

Davidson’s character Varnell originally appeared in a two-part Season 2 arc of “Martin,” where he played a boastful, nationally syndicated talk show host who visits Martin Payne’s local radio station WZUP. Their scene—complete with Davidson belting out “Wooo Wooo Wooo!”—became an instant fan favorite.

The duo even reenacted it during an episode of Lawrence’s YouTube cooking show, “Chef Marty Mar's Kitchen.” While there’s no official word yet on whether Lawrence will return as the beloved Martin Payne, the outlet noted that the actor is expected to appear in multiple episodes.

The announcement also comes just as “In Living Color” celebrates its 35th anniversary. Davidson was an original cast member on the iconic sketch comedy series.
