Oprah Surprises Morehouse Scholars and Calls Them Her Best Investment
Oprah Winfrey made Morehouse College feel super special this weekend when she surprised students in the Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholars Program at a pre-graduation dinner in Atlanta.
The visit caught the scholars off guard and turned into an emotional celebration of Black excellence, education, and the long-running bond between Winfrey and the school.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shares that the students — who call her “Auntie O” — were gathered for dinner when Oprah walked in to greet them. In a video from the night, she joked, “They don’t know that I’m here to check on those grades,” before calling each scholar “the best investment I or anyone could make.”
The Oprah Winfrey Endowed Scholars Program was created to provide financial support, leadership development, and service opportunities for students with demonstrated financial need and a commitment to community service. The program also includes a summer trip to South Africa. Morehouse says the program has helped roughly 800 students graduate since it began in 1989.
Winfrey has also kept showing up over the years in a big way. The AJC also reported that her current total giving to Morehouse stands at $25 million, with scholarships covering tuition, fees, room, and board. At the dinner, she told the students, “You all have already made the return on the investment for me,” adding that they honor not just her name, but “everybody who ever prayed you up.”
For the scholars, the surprise was more than a celebrity visit. It was a reminder that somebody has been betting on their future for decades. And in Oprah fashion, she made sure they knew that support was a belief in them and not charity.
