Janet Jackson to Release New Album Under Her Own Label

Rhythm Nation Records will put out the highly-anticipated project.

Janet Jackson's comeback album is gearing up to be one of those Internet-breaking moments of 2015. To make sure that her stamp is on everything she creates for the long-awaited project, the pop royal is taking full control. Ms. Jackson hit Twitter this morning (June 3), posting a link to her official site, confirming that her next album will be released this fall via her own Rhythm Nation Records in partnership with BMG.

This is a bold move for an artist of her caliber as, to date, Jackson is pretty much the highest profile artist to pursue a "label services" deal through an independent distributor. This could turn out to be a smart business move for the icon as she will retain full ownership, costs and revenues of all of her new music recordings. Now that's a boss move!

As stated in the press release, this collaboration sees the "Feedback" singer make history, becoming the first female African-American recording artist to form her own record label.

In the announcement that BMG released, Janet's stats are also listed, stating that she has, thus far, sold more than 160 million records worldwide, has raked up 10 No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and a total of 27 top 10s, tying with Mariah Carey and Elton John in fifth place as the artist with the most top 10s in the chart's history.

Of her 10 studio albums, six have landed atop the Billboard 200, with her last LP, 2008's Discipline, being the most recent to do so. Will her not-yet-titled upcoming album follow suit? We'll find out in a few months!
