‘Sesame Street’ to Be ‘Reimagined’ on Netflix
Long-running children’s program ‘Sesame Street’ will be reintroduced to more streaming viewers on Netflix this summer.
According to reports, the streaming platform will pick up ‘Sesame Street’ in its 56th season after HBO Max ended the show’s renewal deal last December. Old ‘Sesame Street’ episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max until 2027.
The 25 new episodes of the show will highlight an 11-minute story and will be available to watch same-day on Netflix U.S., in addition to PBS and PBS Kids. “The new season will feature fresh format changes and the return of fan-favorite segments like Elmo's World and Cookie Monster's Foodie Truck," reads a press release for ‘Sesame Street. "Expect new ways to play along as Cookie Monster opens his very own Cookie Cart on Sesame Street, and explore Abby's Fairy Garden, a home to surprising and delightful magical creatures."
This comes as good news for those who wanted ‘Sesame Street’ to continue after threats of a cancellation during public media budget cuts. Fans can also stream library episodes of the show on Netflix.
“I strongly believe that our educational programming for children is one of the most important aspects of our service to the American people, and Sesame Street has been an integral part of that critical work for more than half a century,” stated Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS. “We’re proud to continue our partnership in the pursuit of having a profound impact on the lives of children for years to come.”
This November, ‘Sesame Street’ celebrates its 55th anniversary on PBS, while the show debuted on former educational network NET in 1969.
